With a flying beach holiday to Portugal complete time to get some work done to Kitty starting with the rear wheel bearings, simple job wont take long………..how wrong I was.
With most things Land Rover a simple job in theory turns into to a epic battle of wills, you pitted against seized bolts, and little gremlins that hide in the dark rusty shadows waiting to pounce and ruin your day.
So with the O/S/R Jacked up and axle stand in place the wheel was removed, the fun starts, one of the drive flange bolts is welded with rust and will not budge…..SNAP it sheers not a drama I will extract it after I’ve got the drive flange off 😉 what’s left of the bolt is so badly rusted in drive flange the flange wont budge , not a problem out comes the grinder ,so first part for order ,drive flange and bolts, other than that all went well bearings fitted new brake shoes fitted, all put back together with old drive flange roughly fitted so I could crack on with the N/S.
So Wheel off ,Drum off on The N/S to find the brake cylinder was in a poor state seeping fluid and badly corroded so a new one ordered, ill remove it now save time later when the new one turns ups ,armed with my spanner the simple task of slackening and removing the brake pipe…..simple!!….. NO the gremlins had been out and sprinkled their rust dust all over the brake pipe so it was completely corroded the only option to cut it and order a new brake pipe, other than that the rest of the job went ok just had to wait for the new parts.
The new parts arrived and I promptly fitted them ,bled the braking system ,a complete fluid renewal all went well, just a note really if you buy an old vehicle and need to work on it yourself which is all part of the experience be prepared for problems what should be a 3 hour job will 9 times out of 10 take longer and you will have problems with seized bolts etc. But stick with it account for extra time and a little extra cost, parts are easily sourced for the defender so don’t worry if something breaks its a pain but not the end of the world and internet forums are a wealth of information. 2017 long trip
Been thinking of the long distance 2017 trip and where to go, it looks after pondering over maps that Croatia via either Germany ,Austria and Slovenia or France, Italy and then Slovenia, I think the 1st option will be used, why Croatia, well I served there with the UN in 1995 mainly in Bosnia being driven around in a CVRT Scimitar as Gunner , but I also spent a month in Split Croatia travelling around in a British Army Land Rover 110, we even fitted in a road trip to Dubrovnik, so to go back will be a great trip down memory lane.
The planning starts hope to keep you all updated on route and I have some ideas for some great places to stop at on the way.
